WEST WINDSOR, NJ - West Windsor officials are beginning to grapple with the public health and safety implications of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the region braces for an influx of international visitors and a surge in large-scale watch party events.
Health Officer Jeff Grosser told the township council that regional planning discussions tied to the World Cup are underway, with public health efforts focused on emergency preparedness, food safety, communicable disease monitoring, and coordination with the Office of Emergency Management, law enforcement, and municipal partners.
Council members raised concerns about the volume of people expected to move through New Jersey during the tournament. Several temporary event permits tied to World Cup watch parties are already working their way through municipal staff review, Grosser said, with at least one sanctioned watch party confirmed in Princeton and three others in the immediate region scheduled in the coming weeks.
Mayor Hemant Marathe flagged a major Mercer County event planned for July 11 at Mercer County Park as a particular concern given its proximity to West Windsor.
"Mercer County is doing a big event on July 11 at Mercer County Park for soccer, so we're a little concerned with that," the mayor said, noting that the township has a meeting scheduled to coordinate with county officials.
Grosser's appointment also drew a warm welcome from council members, who thanked him for stepping into the interim role.
