Officers will complete 110 floors on StairMaster machines throughout the day, beginning as early as 6 a.m. Some may participate in uniform or while wearing weighted workout vests, police said.

Residents could see officers taking on the challenge. The department invited community members to stop by, greet the participants and offer encouragement as they work through the memorial climb.

Police encouraged others to participate in the memorial workout. "Our officers are proud to partner with Planet Fitness" to honor the 2,977 people killed in the attacks, the department said.

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum also identifies 2,977 people as having been killed in the attacks across New York City, at the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The department thanked the Nassau Park gym for hosting the officers and supporting the remembrance effort.
