WEST WINDSOR, NJ — As Diwali celebrations begin, the West Windsor Police Department is reminding residents to celebrate safely and be mindful of their neighbors, particularly when it comes to fireworks.
In a Friday advisory, police warned that explosive and aerial consumer fireworks, including firecrackers, bottle rockets and Roman candles, are illegal in New Jersey.
The department urged residents to leave those displays to licensed professionals with the required permits.
"I have seen some displays in my neighborhood that make the fireworks in Disney look small and insignificant," Chief Robert Garofalo said.
Police also cautioned that illegal fireworks can cause serious injuries and fires.
Even legal fireworks carry risks. According to the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety, sparklers can reach temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees and cause burns.
The West Windsor Police Department advised keeping children away from fireworks, including legal ground-based devices, and staying behind designated spectator boundaries at professional displays.
Loud explosions can also frighten pets and cause stress and discomfort for neighbors sensitive to noise, including some veterans and trauma survivors, police said. The department recommended keeping pets indoors in a quiet, secure space.
Residents were encouraged to celebrate with light, kindness and consideration for others.
