WEST WINDSOR, NJ — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Hema who nominated Kavya, a 6th grader from West Windsor. Hema is Kavya's coach.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Kavya is a very smart kid with an extraordinary talent in STEM for her age. She is a Girl Scouts Cadette. She along with her team of six middle school cadettes won dual championships in First Lego League 2022 challenges (both Qualifiers and Regionals). She and her team designed, built and programmed a lego robot that can solve missions related renewable and non-renewable energy sources. They also built a small-scale lego kite turbine using Airborne Wind Energy technology. As the North Jersey Regional Champions for 2023, they have been invited with a Golden ticket to the Lego World Competition to be held in Texas in April 2023. Kavya is the youngest participant with strong programming skills and science knowledge. Apart from robotics, she is also a trained classical singer. She is learning piano and karate. Loves playing soccer. Last year, she received the Presidential award for Volunteering. She along with her girl scouts team created care packages for cancer patients during the pandemic. She also won the Bronze award for Girl Scouts after completing a series of volunteer activities in the local community. As the FLL NJ champion team, she has been invited to attend the 15th Annual Engineers workshop happening in Liberty Science Museum and selected as one of the 10 teams to compete for the NJ FLL innovation award in Feb 2023.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Her passion for volunteering as well as technology. After becoming the Lego First Lego League NJ Champion, she is now conducting workshops to teach robotics to other kids.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Kavya!
