GLOUCESTER COUNTY, NJ — A pain management doctor lost his ability to practice in the future after he was convicted of illegal drug distribution, the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General said.
Larry Pettis, a former physician in Williamstown, pleaded guilty to unlawfully distributing a controlled substance.
Pettis was arrested in December 2024 after he was found to have pre-signed prescriptions for controlled substances to allow another person to use them while he was out of office.
The other individual was not allowed to issue such prescriptions, authorities added.
Pettis also used opioid prescriptions and other orders for controlled dangerous substances without checking on patients first.
According to the State of New Jersey, he also changed and fabricated medical records.
In January 2025, Pettis agreed to an Interim Consent Order and stopped practicing in New Jersey. He voluntarily gave up his certificate to practice medicine while the criminal charges were heard.
His registration to prescribe controlled dangerous substances was revoked and, under a Final Consent Order, was permanently banned from practicing medicine in the state.
On July 29, he was ordered to immediately end any contact with patients and stop providing medical care.
He is also not allowed to go into his old practice during business hours while patients are there.
Pettis can't manage, oversee, supervise, or influence any medical practice or healthcare activities. This includes being called into court as a witness or being used for consulting.
He is also barred from holding any monetary ventures connected to the practice of medicine in New Jersey. This includes charging, receiving, and sharing in any fee for services given by others.
Sentencing is scheduled for October.
