NJ Baby Battling For Nationwide 'Baby Of The Year' Title

WEST DEPTFORD, NJ — A South Jersey baby is rapidly crawling up the ranks in a nationwide "Baby of the Year" battle.

Teddy, 1, and his family are in the middle of gathering votes for the non-profit "Baby2Baby" organization's annual contest to raise awareness and funds for its mission to help struggling families.

The group provides diapers, clothing, and other basic needs to children throughout the United States who are living in poverty.

"Sometimes the smallest hands can reach the farthest," Teddy's mom, Nina Armenia, told Patch. "If Teddy can use his little voice to help another child have something they need or simply feel supported and cared for, then we feel incredibly proud of what he is helping to be a part of."

Along with a national advertisement for actress and model Jessica Alba's "Honest" brand and a feature in "Variety" magazine, Teddy would win $25,000 that his family says will go into a savings account for his college education.

The winner is chosen solely by public voting, where the baby with the most votes at the end of the competition finals is crowned.

Armenia says she and her family will also serve as ambassadors for Baby2Baby's mission over the next year and beyond should they be chosen.

If this group looks familiar, it's not just because Teddy and his smiles have been known to frequent the nearby "Whole and Grounded Café," his favorite restaurant.

"Everyone is so friendly, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the food is delicious," Armenia said. "Plus, their coffee and iced lattes are perfect for all the moms and dads chasing after active kiddos all day...there are coloring books and plenty of games to keep little ones entertained!"

The South Jersey community may also remember Nina's family from their rescue puppy, Sully, who won the 2018 contest as the cover model for "Pet Valu."

Through these efforts, Sully and other dogs vying for the title spread awareness for rescue animals and ways people can get involved with, or without, actually adopting.

"Just like we used Sully's moment to advocate for rescue animals, we want to use Teddy's campaign to highlight the critical work Baby2Baby does for families struggling to get by," said Armenia.

The family actually has three dogs, a feature that has quickly made West Deptford's "RiverWinds" area one of their favorite places to go.

"Teddy loves going for long walks in his stroller with his three pups while his big sister, Luna (age 5), rides her bike or scoots alongside them. It's become such a special part of our family routine," Armenia added.

As of Tuesday evening, Teddy is second in his division and needs to stay in the top 10 by Thursday night in order to move on to the next round.
