GLOUCESTER COUNTY, NJ — A bat and two raccoons with rabies were found across three different neighborhoods, the Gloucester County Health Department said.
A person and dog were exposed to the bat in the area of Joseph L Bowe Boulevard in Glassboro.
The bat tested positive for rabies on Tuesday.
In Mantua Township, a raccoon tested positive on Thursday after it was found near Quest Court.
Another raccoon with rabies was found in Pitman on Thursday near Florence Avenue.
Neither had human exposures reported. It was unclear if any animals came into contact with the infected raccoons.
Rabies, a disease that can be deadly if untreated, is caused by a virus in the saliva of animals.
Pet owners are asked to check their animals' vaccination status and to stay away from wild animals.
Raccoons, foxes, and skunks are among the high-risk animals that feed in areas where outside cars are also fed.
Anyone who sees an animal that appears disoriented or is acting strangely should contact the Gloucester County Animal Control Office immediately at (856) 881-2828.
Other questions surrounding rabies can be directed to the Gloucester County Health Department at (856) 218-4170.
