Chemical Discharges Into South Jersey Lake, Officials Say

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ — A fire extinguishing agent accidentally discharged into Grenloch Lake and caused a white, filmy material, the Gloucester County Office of Emergency Management said.

On Thursday, a complaint was filed with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection in response to the appearance of the lake.

Along with the Gloucester County HazMat Response team and the Washington Township Fire Department, officials responded to the water.

An ABC dry chemical fire extinguishing agent was accidentally let out at the New Jersey Transit Bus Garage along Route 42 (Black Horse Pike).

It flowed into a nearby body of water and made its way into a southern area of Grenloch Lake.

According to officials, less than 25 pounds of the low-toxicity material was released and should have minimal impact to aquatic life.

On Friday, crews are continuing to monitor the situation and will carry out further remediation efforts, if necessary, with the help of a third-party contractor.

The Washington Township Police Department, Gloucester Township Police Department, and their Offices of Emergency Management also assisted at the lake.
