Driver Sentenced After Causing Deadly 2022 Crash In South Jersey: Officials

MONROE TOWNSHIP, NJ — The woman who was charged in connection with a deadly 2022 crash after she was taking pictures on her phone while driving was sentenced on July 31.

On Nov. 10, 2022, Lashaya Goldsmith, 34, of Camden, veered into the lane of oncoming traffic along Malaga Road and hit a tractor-trailer.

The truck's driver, Richard Lupton, 62, of Newport, was declared dead after the vehicle hit an SUV and a tree before it came to a stop in the lawn of a home nearby.

Goldsmith was sentenced in Superior Court to three years of probation, court records showed.

She will lose her ID for five years after she agreed to plead guilty to a charge of third-degree vehicular homicide for failure to maintain lane, according to NJ Advance Media.

"She lost an individual who is no longer there as her soulmate," Judge Renard Scott said to the court in a summary of Lupton's widow's impact statement.

Both Goldsmith and the SUV driver were also left with serious injuries after the crash.
