Drunk Driver 'Doesn't Care' After Hitting Emergency Vehicles In South Jersey: Authorities

BRIDGETON, NJ — A 46-year-old man was arrested on Saturday after he drove drunk and hit a police car and fire truck while authorities were working the scene of a crash involving a pedestrian, the Bridgeton Police Department said.

Cesar Ordonez Torres, of Bridgeton, admitted to officers that he had been drinking and was charged with driving while intoxicated.

At around 8:50 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of W. Broad Street and Walter Street for a man who was hit by a car.

He was conscious, flown to Cooper Hospital, and was last known to be in stable condition.

As officers worked the crash site, they heard a horn go off multiple times near the intersection of W. Broad Street and Atlantic Street.

A driver then hit the front of a marked police vehicle in that direction and sped up towards officers who moved rapidly to avoid a collision.

He then hit a Bridgeton Fire Department fire truck before he came to a stop.

On-site officials confirmed that Torres was alert as he was driving the vehicle.

Officers removed Torres as he was saying that he didn't care what just happened, according to police.

Torres was checked by EMS, but he said he was not hurt. He also told officers that he had been drinking.

He was eventually released from police custody pending a court appearance.
