Glouco Students to Test Consumer Knowledge

The 15th annual Consumer Bowl will be held Thursday at RiverWinds.

Forget geometry and physics, these students are brushing up on consumer-fraud laws.

Students from five area high schools will compete Thursday in the 15th annual Consumer Bowl, sponsored by the Gloucester County Office of Consumer Affairs and the state Division of Consumer Affairs

The competition runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at RiverWinds Community Center.

The competition tests students' knowledge of consumer information and rights in the marketplace, which they've been studying in the classroom.

Each school's team answers questions in a game-show format. There are five students, one alternate and one faculty member on each team. The event will be judged by staff from the county and state consumer-affairs offices.

Students on the winning team will receive a certificate and a plaque from the State Division of Consumer Affairs and move onto the regional finals in March. Each member of the winning team will receive a $25 gift card.

The winning team will attend an upcoming Freeholder meeting to receive special recognition and a proclamation.

In 2010, Gloucester County Institute of Technology's Consumer Bowl team made it all the way to the state championships, winning a bronze medal.
