Kaminski Pins, Three Teammates Fall at Region 8

While Rory Bonner, Evan Zuzulock and Gerald Owens all had the opportunity to sit and watch the opening round of the NJSIAA Region 8 Tournament, four other wrestlers took to the mat Wednesday at Egg Harbor Township to earn their way into this weekend’s quarterfinal round.

Junior Tyler Kaminski made the most of that opportunity, scoring an impressive victory, but Wednesday saw the end of the line for Steve Alt, Christian Terinoni and Dan Gibson.

Kaminski advanced to the 113 quarterfinals with a third-period pinfall. The West Deptford junior scored a pin over Pennsville’s Jacob Samuels 43 seconds into the third.

He will join his trio of teammates in the quarterfinals when the tournament resumes Friday night at 5:30 p.m. Bonner, Zuzulock and Owens earned automatic qualification into the quarterfinals by virtue of winning District 29 titles.

Kaminski will meet No. 3 seed Dylan LaPalomento (30-3) of Washington Township. Zuzlulock is slated to meet Darrien Brooks, of Penns Grove, who scored a 7-1 decision over No. 5 seed Edmund Organo, of Lindenwold.

Bonner earned a No. 3 seed and will be facing Woodstown’s Dustin Baionno after Baionno escaped Wednesday with a 7-6 win over Lower Cape May’s James Hall. Meanwhile, Owens (a No. 5 seed) will take on No. 4 Nick Pustizzi, of Schalick.

Alt put up a good fight at 126, but eventually fell to Paulsboro’s Juan Rivera, 6-1. The outcome was similar to their regular-season bout, which Rivera won 5-0. Terinoni dropped the closest West Deptford decision of the night, as he was clipped by Washington Township’s Matt Salera, 2-0, at 132.

Gibson saw his hit a snag as he was overpowered against Absegami’s Nate Ross, 13-4, in the 152 weight class.
