Man Broke Into South Jersey Home, Shot At Victim: Prosecutor

The suspect fired a handgun 'at close range' but did not hit the victim, authorities said.

WESTVILLE, NJ — A man was charged with attempted murder after breaking into a Gloucester County home and shooting toward the victim, authorities said Monday.

Police responded to the incident just after 11 p.m. Wednesday near the 500 block of Broadway in Westville. Investigators found that Raul Leadum had forced his way into the home and fired a handgun in the direction of the victim "at close range," said the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office (GCPO).

The victim was not hit, authorities said.

Shortly after, Westville police found Leadum and arrested him, the GCPO said. He was placed in the Salem County Correctional Facility, with further legal proceedings pending.

Authorities recovered a rifle and revolver during the ongoing investigation, the GCPO said.

Leadum, 19, of Westville was charged with the following:

  • attempted murder
  • aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
  • unlawful possession of a weapon
  • possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose
  • burglary
