Marine Corps Veteran Volunteers As a Fire Police Officer

Gary Pickering, United States Marine Corp Veteran, Continues Serving as Volunteer Fire Police Officer at West Deptford Fire Department

West Deptford - From the age of 16, Gary Pickering has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to service, beginning as a junior firefighter and continuing through his enlistment in the military after high school. Today, his dedication to protecting others remains as a fire police volunteer at West Deptford Fire Department.

“I had family members who served in the Army, Navy and Air Force, so I wanted to do something different,” said Pickering. “So, I served in the United States Marine Corp for 8 years.”

After the Marine Corp, he moved to West Deptford Township and decided to join the fire department because of his previous background as a junior firefighter.

“I joined West Deptford Fire Department in 2001 and immediately fit right in,” said Pickering. “They make everybody feel welcome.”

Pickering had previous experience at Hopewell Fire Department, Raratian Township Fire Department and Pa Water Rescue in Bucks County. He also brought the skills and mindset he learned in the military with him to his role of volunteering as fire police.

“The military is all about teamwork,” said Pickering. “You have to trust the person to your right and left to protect you and you have to trust yourself to protect them.”

As fire police, his responsibilities include keeping first responders safe and controlling traffic at scenes. On top of working as a team, Pickering enjoys the camaraderie shared in both the military and fire service.

“I enjoy helping out at the scene and eventually want to go to fire school to become a firefighter,” said Pickering.

In addition to helping at emergency scenes, Pickering enjoys helping at West Deptford Fire Department’s community events, such as the Santa Run and Fire Prevention Week.

“The Santa Run we do every year is my favorite,” said Pickering. “Fire Prevention Week is also a great way for us to spread fire safety awareness in the community we serve.”

Every year, West Deptford Fire Department participates in numerous events such as, Fire Prevention Open House and the Township’s Community Day.

“Regardless of your background, we could use your help,” said Assistant Fire Chief David Raso. “We need volunteers to help out at community events, fundraisers, fight fires and protect those fighting the fires.”

No experience is necessary to volunteer. West Deptford Fire Department provides training and gear at no cost to volunteers. Learn more at www.WestDeptfordFirefighter.org.
