Megan Kirschling Named Top Field Athlete at West Deptford Relays

The senior was the top overall high jumper and triple jumper at the meet Saturday.

There was no stopping Megan Kirschling Saturday.

The senior made a rare mistake at the West Deptford Relays—as she sped through the shuttle hurdle relay, she clipped a hurdle, banged up her legs, but still managed to pull the Eagles to a third-place finish in the event.

A little while later, with some more tape on her legs and a nick on her shin, she was warming up at the triple jump, the second of her field events on the day.

A couple attempts later, she had locked up the best jump of the day in Division 2, leaping 33-07.75 to help the Eagles to a second-place finish in the event.

There was still no sign of any lingering effects from the hurdle miscue when Kirschling got over to the high jump—an event she all but owns—to go for another top finish.

She was almost casual in clearing 5-6, the top jump in Divison 2 again, and just missed an attempt at 5-9, which would’ve broken her own school record in the high jump.

Add in a seven-foot leap in the pole vault to help clinch a first-place finish in the event, and it was hard to argue with her selection as the field performer of the meet, in the first time that honor was given at the relays.

On top of that honor, Kirschling’s also found out earlier in the week she qualified in the high jump for the Penn Relays at the end of this month.

She’s lucky No. 13 to qualify for the event, and will face a number of jumpers from both the Northeast as well as Jamaica.
