Philadelphia Nun Found Guilty of Drunk Driving in South Jersey

Kimberly Miller said she took Ambien with a glass of wine, and shouldn't be convicted because she didn't realize she was driving.

A Philadelphia nun has been convicted of driving drunk in South Jersey after she backed her pick-up truck into a business and left the scene of the accident, nj.com reports.

Kimberly Miller, 41, argued that she took an Ambien and drank a glass of wine, and she shouldn’t be found guilty because she didn’t even know she was behind the wheel, according to the report.

The prosecution argued there is nothing about intent in the state’s drunken driving law, and described her condition as “pathological intoxication,” according to the report.

Her defense team also argued she has a history of sleepwalking since childhood, philly.com reports.

She said she was at a book signing on March 7, and said the store owner gave her wine to bring back to her convent, according to the report.

After getting behind the wheel, she backed into the door of the Meineke Auto Shop in Turnersville before leaving and getting pulled over.

The store’s manager was later notified by police that the person responsible for hitting the car was an intoxicated nun who was later arrested.

Her blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit of what is permissible to drive, but the results were dismissed on a technicality, the Courier Post reports.

Her license was suspended for 90 days, and she must pay a $257 fine. She remains on administrative leave from her teaching position.
