Santa Baby Stocking Tradition Continues At St. Joseph's Hospital

This Orange County hospital sends their Christmas babies home in festive stockings — and has been doing so for over 40 years.

ORANGE, CA — Merry Christmas, baby. If you are a family delivering your bundle of joy, this Orange County hospital celebrates baby's first Christmas like no other.

"A Christmas-time baby is already the greatest gift a family can receive," media spokesperson for St. Joseph Hospital told NBC4 News. "The newborns at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange bring an extra sprinkling of holiday cheer by going home swaddled in the Christmas spirit."

This tradition of wrapping newborns in an extra layer of joy for the holidays has been in practice for over 40 years. Mothers are, as can be expected, in awe at the "gift."

"He looks so adorable ... he fits right into it," one mother said of her brand new baby boy.

The stockings say "Baby's First Christmas" and each little head is topped with a hand-knit matching newborn hat.

"The hospital has discharged babies all wrapped up in a special stocking to celebrate their first Christmas," a spokesperson said. "Nurses at the hospital have also been knitting special handmade beanies for the tiny tykes."
