School Safety and Security Conference Returns for Sixth Year

Offered to educators, public safety officials and local parents, the safety conference aims to educate adults about pressing dangers school children face.

With the ever-evolving technologies, are the ever-evolving dangers that threaten so many children. Ten years ago, no one would have had a clue as to what sexting or cyber bullying meant, but today these words circulate through the media like water. 

The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s office has help for local parents struggling to stay current with these emerging dangers, with an annual event aimted at educating adults and teens.    

Heading into its sixth year, the annual School Safety and Security Conference will be open for the second year to parents and students, as well as all teachers and public safety officials. The conference will take place at the TD Bank Performing Arts Center at Washington Township High School on Wednesday, Aug. 15.

“This conference provides a unique opportunity for parents, teachers and law enforcement officials to learn more about the important issues impacting our children,” said Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean F. Dalton in a statement. 

Featured speakers will touch on issues pertinent to teenagers and safeguarding them in today‘s world. Topics will include internet safety, sexual predators, gang activity and technology/invasion of privacy.

“Every parent of school-age children should consider spending a few hours of quality time to hear presentations that are critical for raising children in these challenging times,” said Gloucester County Superintendent of Schools Robert Bumpus.

One featured speaker is Dr. Michael J. Bradley, author of Yes, Your Teen Is Crazy!: Loving Your Kid Without Losing Your Mind. 

In addition to being an author, Bradley has a doctorate from Temple University and has counseled families and children for more than 20 years. He has written four books on teen and parent relations throughout his career.

Other speakers include Jim Janco, Director of Security and Privacy for Comcast, Capt. Steven Tallard of the New Jersey Division of Parole, Lt. Edwin Torres of the Juvenile Justice Commission and Sgt. Steven LaPorta of the Gloucester County Prosecutor‘s Office High-Tech Crimes Unit.      

Admission to the event is free, but organizers request those interested to register via email to cyberbullying@co.gloucester.nj.us with names, organization and number of people attending for advanced registration.

Registration will be held from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., alongside a continental breakfast. The conference will begin at the conclusion of registration and will continue until 1 p.m.
