Second Arrest In Fatal Summer Shooting In Gloucester County: Cops

A second person has been arrested in the fatal shooting of a Woodbury man that happened last summer, authorities announced on Wednesday.

Corey Grier, 20 of Woodbury, was arrested on Monday, Jan. 28, in connection with the death of 32-year-old Misael Ruiz Garcia of Woodbury, Gloucester County Prosecutor Charles “Chuck” Fiore announced.

He has been charged with first-degree felony murder, first-degree robbery, second-degree burglary, third-degree theft, and second-degree conspiracy to commit robbery. Grier is being held in Salem County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing.

Thadius Wyatt Oswald, 19, of Paulsboro, was previously arrested in Garcia’s death. Garcia was found outside his home after he had been shot in the head. He was discovered by police who were dispatched to the scene just after 11:30 p.m. Saturday night, Aug. 11, 2018, according to the prosecutor's office.

He was pronounced dead on the scene. An autopsy determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death as homicide.

Eyewitnesses told investigators a suspect ran from the scene on foot. Two days later, Oswald was arrested in Gloucester City without incident by officers of the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office Fugitive Unit and the U.S. Marshal's Service New York-New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force. Further investigation resulted in the arrest of Grier this week.

“This additional arrest is a direct result of intensive investigative work which has been ongoing without pause since the murder of Mr. Garcia,” Fiore said. “The GCPO and partner agencies, including the Woodbury City Police Department, have been seamless in their cooperative efforts, collecting key evidence and facts which led to Monday’s apprehension and arrest of Corey Grier.”
