WDHS Sports Week In Review: Winter Ends

One of the best winter seasons in years in West Deptford officially came to an end last week.

The winter season officially came to a close this past week, bringing to an end what has been one of the most successful winter’s has produced in many years. Last week saw the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams compete in playoff games, and a pair of wrestlers going head-to-head with the best the state has to offer.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

The Eagles’ season came to an end in the first round of the Group 2 playoffs. Saddled with the long trip to Barnegat, West Deptford was unable to find the stroke that helped them win 14 games this season,

“I think it was just one of those things where the bubble just burst,” said West Deptford head coach Don Clark. “I think they did as much as they could for as long as they could all season, and it just came to an end. The seniors took us as far as we could go.”

The loss brought to an end the high school basketball careers of starters Tom Jakubowski, Tim Fair, Kyle Redrow and Tim Krott. Check back later this week for a wrap-up of the season.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

No. 7 West Deptford entered the playoffs as hot as any team around, and it showed in a over No. 10 Deptford. The Eagles played swarming defense and got a season-high 12 points from both Paige Paratore and Megan Knoblock. Unfortunately, senior forward Megan Kirschling injured her foot in the second quarter and was only able to return for limited action.

The injury lingered on into a quarterfinal matchup against No. 2 Middle Township, and it proved too much for the Eagles to overcome. West Deptford tried to slow the tempo of the game, but could not find enough offense in a . The Eagles finished the season with a school-record 20 wins. WRESTLING

Rory Bonner has been the top wrestler for West Deptford all season, so it comes as little surprise that he was the last Eagle standing at the state wrestling championships in Atlantic City this past weekend.

After losing in the pre-quarterfinals, Bonner worked all the way back to a at 182 pounds.

Bonner concluded his run with a 3-1 win over Moorestown’s Thomas Forline in Sunday’s fifth-place match. Bonner got the points he needed on a takedown midway through the first period and never looked back.

Teammate Tyler Kaminski also got his first taste of states, but wasn’t as successful. Kaminski lost in the pre-quarterfinals and then lost in the next round of wrestlebacks.
