West Deptford, County Population Up in 2010 Census

Gloucester County experienced rapid growth in the past decade, and West Deptford was just off the county's pace.

West Deptford added 2,300 residents over the last decade, a double-digit percentage increase, but it was only the 10th fastest-growing municipality in Gloucester County.

That’s how fast the area is growing.

The just-released 2010 Census numbers show the county’s population grew by 33,615, the third most in the state, a 13.2 percent clip, the highest rate of growth in all of New Jersey.

West Deptford was barely off that pace, growing by 11.9 percent to 21,677 residents, which is actually down slightly from the 2009 estimate of 22,054.

The township was one of only a few in the northwest end of the county to see growth; neighboring Deptford was up 14.6 percent, but Woodbury, Paulsboro, National Park and Westville all saw slight population losses, and Woodbury Heights was essentially flat, in the past 10 years.

There was explosive growth elsewhere; Woolwich Township more than doubled its 2000 population, East Greenwich grew by 76 percent and Harrison Township was up 41.3 percent.

New Jersey as a whole was home to 8,414,350 people in 2010, according to the Census Bureau, a 4.5-percent increase from the prior census count.

The state's five most populated towns in 2000 stayed in the same order in 2010, with Newark (277,140), Jersey City (247,597), Paterson (146,199), Elizabeth (124,969) and Edison Township (99,967) leading the way.
