West Deptford Downs Cinnaminson to Advance to Wrestling Final

The Eagles defeated the Pirates on bonus points Wednesday night.

It doesn’t get much closer than Wednesday night’s NJSIAA South Jersey Group 2 wrestling playoff match between West Deptford and Cinnaminson.

Each team won seven bouts, but the Eagles’ bonus points were enough to give No. 2 West Deptford a 35-25 win over the third-seeded Pirates, according to nj.com.

The Eagles visit No. 1 Collingswood in the final Friday night.

Cinnaminson won the first three bouts to take a 9-6 lead, but the Eagles won five straight, 152-195 pounds, to come away with the victory.

This included pinfalls from Jarryd Ley (152), Jason Carter (182) and Gio Gismondi (195), and a major decision by Cameron Shields at 170. Richie Brown won a 4-2 decision at 160.

John Delia picked up a major decision for West Deptford at 106, and 126-pounder Dylan Fischer picked up a pinfall victory.

Jahmil Williams opened the match for Cinnaminson with an 8-7 decision at 132, followed by a 5-0 win at 138 for Ryan Teague and a sudden victory for Joe Saxton at 145.

Joe Cody snapped West Deptford’s winning streak with a 4-3 ultimate tiebreaker win at 220, followed by a pinfall victory for heavyweight Keith Swartley.

Isaiah Elias scored a 5-1 decision at 113, and Kevin Schoch capped the match with a major decision win for Cinnaminson.

Cinnaminson advanced to Wednesday night’s semifinal with a 44-18 win over No. 6 Delran on Monday night. As the No. 2 seed, West Deptford had a first-round bye.

Cinnaminson now looks forward to the district tournament and the individual portion of the season, but will continue to do so as a team, Elias told the Burlington County Times following the match.

West Deptford improved to 12-7. Cinnaminson finished the season with a record of 14-4.
