WD High School Alum Makes Big Impression as Freshman Athlete
Continuing her soccer career at Salem College, Tarryn Bundy picks up where she left off, garnering numerous distinctions as a first-year forward.
Despite graduating West Deptford High School last year, Tarryn Bundy is not planning on giving up on her passion for soccer any time soon. Leaving high school as a standout athlete, Bundy now continues to make waves as a freshman at Salem College in North Carolina.
"I was really excited and pleased about the season I had,” says Bundy.
Coming off of her first season, Bundy was nominated to the Great South Atlantic Conference (GSAC) Women's Soccer All Freshman Team 2012 and Womens First Soccer Team All Conference. In addition, Bundy brought the GSAC Freshman of the Year Award home to Salem College.
Scoring nine goals this season with five assists, Bundy reprised her position on the soccer field as a forward—a position she has played her entire soccer career.
“That’s just always been my position,” says Bundy, who began playing soccer for West Deptford Township when she was just seven-years-old.
Reminiscing about this past season, Bundy says leading her team to a victory against a team that had previously beaten the Spirits, was one of the many highlights from her first season at Salem College. Scoring in the middle of the second half, Bundy and her team beat Covenant College—the only team to beat the Spirits in regular season—with a score of 1-0.
Looking forward, Bundy says there is always room for improvement. She adds that while awards are nice, she doesn’t believe that they are what define one’s soccer career.
“I hope to be as big a part of the team as possible,” she says.
Bundy gives a large part of the credit to her alma mater, saying that her time at West Deptford High School helped her to grow as an athlete.
“I had a lot of leadership opportunities at West Deptford High School and I’m grateful,” she explains.
Playing under former high school soccer coach Jon Cobb her sophomore year, she says girls’ soccer never missed a beat as current coach Veronica McGinniss took over the following year. Both coaches, she says gave her the ability hone in her talents, making her the athlete she is today.
In addition to soccer, Bundy also made strides in in girls’ lacrosse and girls’ basketball during her time at West Deptford High School. With eight varsity letters from West Deptford High School in total, Bundy was awarded with the Silver Eagle in 2012 at the West Deptford High School Annual All Sports Banquet.
