Woodbury Junior-Senior High School Wins BASF $5,000 Grant
Grant will allow students to study the physics of athletic gear for safety.

Woodbury Junior-Senior High School is pleased to announce that it has received a $5,000 grant from BASF Science Education for the purpose of “Studying the Physics of Athletic Gear for Safety.” With this grant, Woodbury Junior-Senior High School will purchase Vernier Lab Quest Minis, and a full range of sensors and software to furnish six complete lab stations. Using this equipment, students in the Physics and AP Physics classes will perform experiments that relate to sports science, specifically on helmets and athletic safety. Motion sensors will be used to determine the force and impact on equipment and force sensors inside equipment will be used to determine the force actually felt by players. Data will be compared to accepted values of what the human body can withstand. Students will learn precisely how protective gear impacts athletes to consider the need for different gear in all sports.
