2 Teens Set Fire To Playground, Charged With Arson In Union County: Police

The boys, ages 16 and 17, were charged with second-degree arson and criminal mischief.

PLAINFIELD, NJ — Two teens, who police say set fire to a playground at Tëmike Park in 2024, were charged with arson, announced Union County officials on Wednesday.

"Acts of vandalism like this not only destroy public spaces but also impact the children and families who rely on them," said Union County Commissioner Chairwoman Lourdes Leon. "I want to thank our Union County Police Department for their persistence in bringing those responsible to justice."

On the night of Oct. 23, 2024, Union County Police received 911 calls reporting a fire engulfing the playground in Plainfield.

Fire crews responded quickly to extinguish the blaze, which was later determined to have been intentionally set, causing significant damage to the structure, according to officials.

After an extensive investigation by the Union County Police Investigations Division, detectives identified and arrested two juvenile male suspects, aged 16 and 17.

Both were charged with second-degree arson and criminal mischief. The juveniles were released to their guardians pending a court appearance.

"Public parks are essential to our neighborhoods, and crimes like these will not be tolerated," said Captain John da Silva, Officer in Charge of the Union County Police Department. "Our detectives worked diligently to identify the suspects, ensuring accountability and safeguarding our shared spaces."
