ATMs Targeted With Skimmers In Union County

A device used to illegally "skim" credit card numbers was found installed in Clark, Springfield, Union and Roselle Park.

Springfield, NJ -- A device used to illegally “skim” credit card numbers was found installed at multiple ATMs across Union County including Clark, Springfield, Union and Roselle Park.

Roselle Park police reported discovering a skimmer installed onto an ATM machine at the 7-11 convenience store in Roselle Park on Thursday, Jan. 14.

Two more skimmers were located in Union by township police on ATMs at the 7-11 stores at the1080 Galloping Hill Road location and 2319 Route 22 location, Union Police reported on Facebook.

Springfield Police also located a skimmer on an ATM at a 7-11 store at 205 Route 22 in Springfield.

A skimmer was also located on the ATM found inside the 7-11 store on Westfield Avenue in Clark by police.

Union Township Detectives set up a surveillance of both Union locations. Detective Lieutenant Robert Perez, Sergeant Kevin Skiper, Detectives Anthony Lagoa, Pat Bradley, Matt Sakala and Joe Foster, and Officers Tom Ollemar, Robert Kiselow, and Antoine Colbert participated in the surveillance.

At about 9:20 PM, detectives assigned to the Route 22 7-11 store reported observing a man come in and do something with the ATM and then leave the store in a car, police reported.

Police stopped the car and found different disguises, four cell phones and one skimmer in the car. Both men were arrested and the car was towed. All the items in the car were seized for further investigation, police reported.

“Cyber-criminals install skimmers, which are essentially malicious card readers that grab the data off the card’s magnetic stripe, on to the real payment terminals so that they can harvest data from every person that swipes their cards,” Union Police posted on their Facebook page. “The thief has to come back to the compromised machine to pick up the file containing all the stolen data, but with that information in hand he can create cloned cards or just break into bank accounts to steal money.”

Locals who have used any of these machines are encouraged to check their statements frequently or contact their local credit or debit card company and alert them of the situation.
