Aggressive Bear Charges At Officer Before Being Killed By Plainfield Police

The bear was in an urban part of the city with numerous schools within walking distance, said Police Director James Abney.

PLAINFIELD, NJ — A bear spotted roaming the city near a daycare was killed by Plainfield Police after it became aggressive and ran at an officer, said officials.

On Thursday, June 1, at around 6:30 a.m., a bear was reported in Plainfield and police contacted New Jersey Fish and Wildlife, who said they would respond when the bear was contained.

At around 9:15 a.m., the bear was reported in the parking lot of Hubbard Middle School. Police were finally able to contain the bear within the backyard of 504 Grant Ave., which is right near the Black United Fund daycare center, said Police Director James Abney.

NJ Fish and Wildlife was contacted again and told police they would respond, said Abney.

Police then began an organized containment of the bear as they hoped to guide the bear back out of the city and northbound, said Abney.

The bear stopped in the area of Prescott Place and West 4th Street and again climbed a tree.

NJ Fish and Wildlife arrived at around 1:30 p.m., and as conversations took place, the bear was startled and came down from the tree in an aggressive manner, said Abney.

"The Bear ran directly at a Plainfield Police officer who attempted to make loud noises and possibly stop the bear," said Abney.

"When these actions did not have the necessary results, considering the totality of the situation, the safety of the public, and the individuals on scene, the bear was euthanized," said Abney.

NJ Fish and Wildlife took possession of the bear, and the scene was cleared.

"I commend the actions of the Plainfield Police Officers on the scene. They displayed patience and bravery while facing a dangerous situation that could have easily ended tragically, and their actions should be applauded," said Abney. "Considering that that area of the city is urban, and there are numerous schools within walking distance, they made a split-second decision that I support wholeheartedly."
