Bicyclist Dies After Hit By Pickup Truck And Car On I-78 In Union County

The Jersey City man was riding an electric bike on I-78 when he collided with a pickup truck and then was hit by another car: Police.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — A Jersey City man riding an electric bike on Interstate 78 was killed Monday morning after he collided with a pick-up truck and was then hit by another car, said New Jersey State Police Det. Jeffrey Lebron.

On Sept. 11 at 6:09 a.m., a Ford pick-up truck, a Mazda passenger vehicle, and a Zugo E-bike were driving westbound on I-78 in Union Township.

A crash occurred between the Ford and the pedalcyclist of the E-Bike at milepost 51.4 causing the E-Bike to overturn and get hit by the Mazda, said Lebron.

As a result of the crash, the pedalcyclist, Irving Batista, 34, of Jersey City, received fatal injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

All lanes were closed for a number of hours on Monday and have since reopened.
