Alleged Burglar Targeted Car Left Running With Air On

The car was left parked, running with the A/C on and unattended when the alleged burglar tried to break in, Mountainside Police say.

MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ — An alleged car burglary was busted after he tried to break into a car that was left parked and running with the air conditioning on, Mountainside Police report.

On Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. a call to Mountainside Police reported a man trying to get into a vehicle left parked and running and unattended on Bristol Road, Lt. Joseph Giannuzzi said.

The alleged burglar tried to get inside by pulling on both doors and then ran away when confronted by the victim who was cooling his car using the air conditioning, Giannuzzi said.

A perimeter was set up and the suspect, later identified as Davonne Martin, 19, of Newark, was found on Charles Street, Giannuzzi said.

Martin was charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree criminal attempt and was released to the Scotch Plains Police on an outstanding arrest warrant for $1,000.

"Once again the Mountainside Police Department would like to stress the need to lock your vehicles, remove all keys and remotes, do not leave valuable in them over night, and never leave your vehicle unattended while running climate control features of the car," Giannuzzi said.
