ELIZABETH, NJ — One person is dead, and another is critically injured following a late-night crash involving a motor scooter and a Hyundai in Elizabeth on Wednesday, according to city officials.
The crash happened around 9:24 p.m. on Newark Avenue near the Walgreens parking lot, Public Information Officer Ruby Contreras said.
Preliminary findings indicate the Hyundai was trying to turn into the parking lot while the scooter was going south on Newark Avenue when the vehicles crashed, officials said.
The scooter driver was taken to Trinitas Regional Medical Center, where he later died from injuries, authorities said.
His identity had not been released as of Thursday afternoon.
A passenger riding on the scooter suffered severe injuries and was taken to University Hospital in critical condition, officials said.
Authorities said the Hyundai driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Officials also confirmed next-of-kin notifications have been made.
The crash remains under active investigation.
