WESTFIELD, NJ — If it feels like there’s always something new opening in downtown Westfield lately, you’re not imagining it.
From trendy cafés and dessert shops to upscale restaurants and nationally known brands, downtown Westfield’s food scene has been steadily growing — and local business leaders say interest from restaurants and retailers looking to move into town continues to rise.
Part of that growth comes from the town’s walkability and the steady flow of people who visit downtown to shop, dine, and spend time in the area, according to Daniel Taugher, Executive Director of Downtown Westfield Corporation.
“Restaurants continue to be one of the core drivers of activity downtown,” said Taugher, Executive Director of the Downtown Westfield Corporation. “They not only bring people in, but they help define the overall character and energy of the district.”
The downtown dining scene now includes everything from casual cafés and bakeries to upscale dining and specialty food concepts.
Taugher pointed to businesses like Sweet Waters Steak House, Akai Lounge, Ferraro's, Isola Italian Trattoria and Addams Tavern as examples of the variety now spread throughout downtown.
Seafood restaurant Limani Seafood Grill and longtime fine dining destination Chez Catherine were also highlighted as part of the town’s growing restaurant mix.
Dessert and specialty food shops have also become a bigger part of downtown Westfield in recent years.
Businesses like Farinolio, Kirshenbaum Baking Co., Bovella's Pastry Shoppe, The Baked Bear and Fizzy Pop have helped fuel that trend.
“At its core, Downtown Westfield is an experiential and highly walkable district,” Taugher said. “Dessert and specialty food concepts naturally complement that.”
According to Taugher, those businesses often encourage visitors to stay downtown longer — whether it’s grabbing dessert after dinner, walking around with friends, or stopping somewhere after shopping.
Downtown Westfield has also continued attracting larger regional and national brands in recent years, including Sweetgreen and PopUp Bagels. Insomnia Cookies is also expected to open downtown.
Taugher said the downtown district has become increasingly competitive for both restaurant and retail space as more businesses look to move into town.
“Competition, when balanced correctly, creates a stronger overall mix and gives consumers more options,” he said.
At the same time, Taugher said maintaining a balance between longtime local businesses and newer concepts remains an important priority for downtown Westfield.
“We’re always looking to attract new businesses that bring energy and fresh ideas, but it’s just as important that they complement what’s already here,” he said.
According to Taugher, one of the biggest changes in recent years has been the growing shift toward businesses focused more on creating experiences than simply selling products.
“It’s not only about what a customer needs or is looking for,” Taugher said. “It’s about how they feel when they’re there.”
