UNION COUNTY, NJ — A new countywide safety plan is identifying 20 road corridors where officials say targeted improvements could help reduce serious crashes and make travel safer for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
The Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Action Plan, adopted by the Union County Board of County Commissioners on April 30, outlines a long-term strategy for reducing traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries across the county’s roadway network.
The plan was developed using federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation and is based on traffic data analysis, stakeholder input, and public engagement. County officials say it is intended to guide future safety projects and help prioritize where upgrades may have the most impact.
“This Action Plan gives us a strong framework to continue improving roadway safety while working collaboratively with our municipalities and regional partners,” said Union County Commissioner Chair Joseph C. Bodek.
The 20 corridors identified in the plan are described by officials as areas where safety enhancements could include intersection redesigns, roadway modifications, and other infrastructure changes aimed at improving conditions for all road users.
Union County Manager Ed Oatman said the plan is intended to serve as a practical tool for planning and funding future projects.
“The level of detail and analysis included in this plan reflects a tremendous collaborative effort,” Oatman said. “It gives the County and its municipal partners a valuable tool for identifying priority projects, improving roadway conditions, and pursuing grant funding opportunities that will benefit residents for years to come.”
Officials noted that implementation will vary, with some projects led by the county and others requiring coordination with local municipalities or regional partners. The plan is also expected to support future applications for federal and state transportation funding.
County officials said they are already pursuing a federal SS4A implementation grant for one corridor identified in the plan and are working with regional planning partners on additional safety funding opportunities.
