WESTFIELD, NJ — Federal immigration authorities took two people into custody during a traffic stop in Westfield on Tuesday morning, according to town officials.
The incident took place on North Avenue and involved U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), specifically its Enforcement and Removal Operations Newark Field Division, officials said.
Westfield Public Information Officer Kim Forde said the town’s police department was notified after the operation had already concluded and did not take part in it.
Forde said federal authorities conducted a traffic stop involving one vehicle and took two people into custody, and confirmed that local police were informed afterward and were not involved.
No further details about the circumstances of the stop or the individuals involved were immediately.
