WESTFIELD, NJ — Major upgrades are moving ahead at one of Westfield’s most heavily used recreation sites after the Town Council approved more than $1.7 million in funding Tuesday night for improvements at the Houlihan-Sid Fay athletic complex.
The project will replace aging turf fields and add new amenities, including a restroom facility, storage space, and parking improvements, aimed at keeping up with steady year-round use by youth sports programs, school teams, and community recreation.
Mayor Jeremy Berman said the upgrades are needed to maintain the long-term usability of the facility.
“These fields have served the community well for many years,” Berman said. “They’re at the point where replacement is necessary to make sure we can continue to safely support the level of activity they see every day.”
He also pointed to the broader improvements planned for the site.
“This is about more than just turf,” he said. “It’s about making sure the entire complex works better for families, athletes, and everyone who uses it.”
The fields being replaced have been in use for years and are widely relied on across town sports programs, according to officials.
The project includes about $880,000 for turf field replacement and more than $860,000 for parking and facility upgrades. Combined, the work totals just over $1.7 million and will be funded through a mix of bonding and municipal capital funds.
The Houlihan-Sid Fay complex serves as one of the town’s main athletic hubs, hosting games, practices, and recreational activity throughout the year.
With funding now approved, the project will now move into the planning and scheduling phase ahead of construction.
