Swim Program Aims To Give Parents, Children Confidence This Summer In Union County

Free lessons return in Clark as officials look to expand access to a key safety skill for young residents.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — A summer program focused on water safety is returning to Union County, offering free swimming lessons for eligible children ages 3 to 12 at the Walter E. Ulrich Memorial Pool in Clark.

The program, offered in partnership with The Gateway Family YMCA, runs from July 7 through August 27 and is designed to help young children build basic swimming skills in a structured, small-group setting. Class sizes are capped at six participants to keep instruction focused and hands-on.

Officials say the goal is to make swimming instruction more accessible while also helping families feel more confident as children spend time around pools and other water this summer.

“Knowing our children are equipped with swimming skills and can safely participate in water activities over the summer can bring parents and grandparents great peace of mind,” said Union County Commissioner Chairman Joseph C. Bodek. “We are thrilled to offer this opportunity again to families across the county free of charge, making this valuable life skill more accessible.”

The program includes beginner and basic classes for both age groups, 3–5 and 6–12, with sessions held on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the summer.

Eligibility is limited to children from qualifying households, including families participating in programs such as SNAP, WIC, Head Start, Section 8 housing, and other assistance programs. Proof of eligibility is required at the time of registration.

Funding for the program comes through the Office of Open Space, Recreation, and Historic Preservation Trust Fund, which supports recreation and community initiatives throughout the county.

“Our Office of Open Space, Recreation, and Historic Preservation was built to support programs like this,” said Union County Commissioner Alexander Mirabella. “It opens doors for residents and gives children the chance to build important life skills in a fun and supportive environment.”

More information and registration details are available at ucnj.org/swim through the Union County Department of Parks and Recreation.
