WESTFIELD, NJ — What started as a series of messages about alleged banking issues turned into a troubling experience for an elderly Westfield couple, according to Westfield Police.

The couple reported being contacted by individuals who claimed there was a problem involving a mailed payment and banking activity. The communications later expanded to include phone calls, text messages, and emails.

According to Westfield Police, the callers eventually directed the couple to go to their bank and arranged for a vehicle to pick them up.

The situation changed after authorities were contacted. Communication with the callers stopped, and the vehicle left the area, according to the report.

Westfield Police said the incident appeared to be part of an attempted fraud scheme targeting the couple.

At the time of the report, it was not known whether any money had been lost or whether any personal information had been compromised.

The incident was reported to Westfield Police on June 13.
