WESTFIELD, NJ — A new New York City bagel shop preparing to open in Westfield is adding fresh competition to an already crowded stretch known for bagels — but one longtime local business says it isn’t concerned.
The incoming shop, PopUp Bagels, is set to open on July 10 at 220 South Avenue West, according to nj.com. The new location will place it within walking distance of established Westfield bagel spots, including Bagel Chateau.
For Bagel Chateau owner Adel Ebrahim, the development isn’t something that changes how the business operates day to day.
“I welcome the competition because Westfield residents will decide whether or not it will succeed or fail,” Ebrahim said.
Bagel Chateau has been a fixture in Westfield for more than 30 years, serving customers throughout the day with bagels, breakfast sandwiches, salads, and catering for local events.
Ebrahim, who took over the business after a co-owner retired, said the shop continues to follow a Brooklyn-style bagel tradition that has been part of its identity since its early days.
“We do the bagels Brooklyn style which makes us unique,” he said.
Inside the shop, that approach shows up in small but consistent details — from bagels baked fresh daily on site to lox sliced fresh every day. Ebrahim also pointed to menu choices like white tuna in the shop’s tuna salad as part of a broader focus on ingredient quality.
The business has remained a steady presence in town despite changes in the local dining scene and increasing competition along South Avenue.
Still, Ebrahim said his priorities remain unchanged.
“I love Westfield and I love my customers,” he said.
Bagel Chateau continues to operate seven days a week and serves customers throughout the morning and afternoon rush.
