Westfield Generator Safety Reminders Issued As Storm Recovery Continues

WESTFIELD, NJ — As Westfield continues recovering from recent severe weather that caused widespread power outages, downed trees, and road closures, the Westfield Fire Department is reminding residents about important generator safety precautions.

More than 1,500 PSE&G customers in Westfield were affected by power outages following the storm, according to town updates. While crews continue working to restore power and clear storm-related damage, some residents have turned to portable generators to keep essential appliances running.

Fire officials said residents should take precautions when operating generators to help prevent fires and protect against carbon monoxide exposure.

The department reminded residents that generators should never be used inside homes, garages, basements, crawl spaces, or any enclosed or partially enclosed areas. Carbon monoxide, an odorless and potentially deadly gas, can build up quickly in these spaces.

Officials said generators should be placed at least 20 feet away from a home, with the exhaust directed away from doors, windows, and vents.

Residents should also avoid plugging generators directly into wall outlets, according to the Fire Department. Instead, officials recommend using heavy-duty outdoor extension cords or having a licensed electrician install a transfer switch.

Additional safety reminders include allowing generators to cool before refueling, never adding fuel while a generator is running, and keeping generators protected from rain and moisture to reduce the risk of electrical shock.

The safety reminder comes as Westfield crews continue responding to storm damage throughout the community. Town officials previously reported multiple road closures caused by downed trees and utility wires, while Public Works crews continue debris removal efforts.

Officials have also reminded residents to use caution around storm-related hazards and to report issues through the appropriate channels. Downed power lines should be reported by calling 911, while power outages should be reported directly to PSE&G.

The Westfield Fire Department also reminded residents to check their smoke alarms regularly. Officials said smoke alarms should be tested monthly and replaced if they are more than 10 years old.
