If You Ride An E-Bike In Westfield, New Rules Take Effect Next Week

Updated state regulations will require registration, helmets and a minimum rider age.

WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield residents who ride e-bikes will soon have to follow a new set of state rules, including registration requirements, a minimum rider age and mandatory helmet use.

Beginning July 19, updated New Jersey regulations will take effect statewide, bringing new requirements for anyone operating an e-bike.

Under the new rules, riders must be at least 15 years old to operate an e-bike. E-bikes must also be registered through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, and riders will be required to wear helmets and obey all applicable traffic laws.

Westfield officials reminded residents about the upcoming changes this week as the town prepares for the new regulations to take effect during one of the busiest riding seasons of the year.

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission is offering appointments for e-bike registrations and provides information online about eligibility requirements, registration requirements and the application process.

Westfield police said they will continue educating riders about the updated regulations while enforcing the new requirements after they take effect.

The reminder comes as e-bike use continues to grow across New Jersey, particularly during the summer months when more residents are using local streets, parks and shared pathways.

Residents can find additional information about the new regulations and register an e-bike through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission's website.
