40-Road Improvement Plan Underway In Westfield, School-Area Roads Targeted First

Rahway Avenue work is underway, and Westfield expects about 16 school-area road projects done by month's end.

WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield has begun paving work on Rahway Avenue as part of a broader road improvement plan that will affect about 40 roads or sections.

At the Aug. 11 council meeting, Town Administrator Jim Gildea said the ADA ramps and concrete work discussed at the last meeting had been completed and that milling and paving had started.

Gildea told the council that work was underway last week on Rahway Avenue, which he described as a major thoroughfare through town.

He said the section being paved runs between roughly the Codding Road area and Willow Grove Road.

"It's impacting lots of people, but it is August, so it's quieter," said Gildea.

According to Gildea, the Rahway Avenue project is one of the town's state aid jobs carried over from last year.

He said about 16 roads or sections of roads that affect school areas are expected to be finished before the end of the month, ahead of the school opening.

"And then the remaining roughly 28 or so roads will be done over the course of September, early October, that are less impactful to school areas," Gildea said.
