Many in our communities know Imagine, A Center for Coping with Loss as a center where free peer support groups are offered to children, teens, young adults and caregivers who are grieving the loss of someone close to them. What is less well known is that Imagine also offers support groups for adults coping with a loss due to suicide. This group does not have age restrictions.
Often those coping with suicide loss are struggling with two questions: "Why did my person take their own life?" and "Is there something I could have done to prevent it?" Additionally, the societal stigma and isolation surrounding suicide may prevent those coping with a loss due to suicide from seeking help while also preventing their friends and family from offering support even though they want to help.
Because loss due to suicide can involve these unique emotional challenges for those who are grieving, Imagine created groups just for those coping with loss due to suicide. Groups are held in person at their center in Mountainside, and they offer a virtual group as well.
"Loss due to suicide may introduce a deep layer of isolation and unanswered questions that can make traditional grieving feel even heavier," said Abigail Priece, Clinical Program Supervisor at Imagine. "By offering groups designed specifically for suicide loss survivors, we create a safe, non-judgmental space where people can share their truth, find mutual understanding, and know they don't have to carry this pain by themselves."
If you or someone you know is coping with the loss of a close family member due to suicide, please know that you are not alone.
