📰 News we're reading

1. Stop & Shop closing Westfield, Basking Ridge stores (nj.com subscription) — Westfield shoppers will lose a key grocery option this fall, as the Stop & Shop at 219 Elm Street is scheduled to close on Oct. 22. The company says employees can transfer to other locations and stresses the Westfield and Basking Ridge shutdowns are separate decisions, with no additional New Jersey closures currently planned.

2. Head Secretary of Jefferson Elementary School to Retire in January (tapinto.net) — Westfield families at Jefferson Elementary will see a big change this winter, as longtime head secretary Jill Niemczyk will retire from Westfield Public Schools on Jan. 1, 2027. After 20 years of warmly welcoming students, parents, and staff, she's preparing to relocate to South Carolina, and district leaders are publicly thanking her for her dedication to the school community.

3. Football: Elizabeth Defeats Union, 19-7, in Battle of Unbeatens (tapinto.net) — Union's strong football start ended with a 19-7 home loss to Elizabeth, but the result sets up a notable matchup for Westfield fans next Friday night. With Union now 2-1 and riding a powerful ground game, Westfield will travel there looking to hand the Farmers a second straight defeat and reclaim some early-season momentum.

4. Bennett calls for national AI regulatory framework (newjerseyglobe.com) — A congressional race affecting Westfield is spotlighting how the U.S. should regulate artificial intelligence, after a Westfield High School incident involving alleged fake explicit images spurred concern. Challenger Rebecca Bennett and Rep. Tom Kean Jr. both back federal standards, but differ in approach, making AI policy a key issue for local voters this fall.
