Officers found that the injured man was Silvano Cruz of Carteret and that he had been shot in the thigh, said Union Deputy Chief Barry Cohen.

Police reportedly determined the injury was caused by an accidental discharge.

According to police, the discharge happened after a shell casing was ejected from a handgun and fell inside Cruz's shirt.

The wound was described by police as non-life-threatening. Union Fire Department and EMS also came to the shooting range to provide medical aid.

Cruz was then taken to University Hospital in Newark for additional evaluation and treatment. No other injuries were reported.
