The crash happened on Wednesday at around 7:40 p.m. in the area of 262 Chestnut St., where a male pedestrian was hit by a vehicle described as a gray Dodge Durango, said Union Deputy Chief Barry Cohen.
The Durango reportedly fled toward Roselle Park.
The pedestrian, who is described as believed to be Hispanic and between 30–40 years old, suffered a serious head injury and was found unresponsive and bleeding at the scene, said Cohen.
He was taken to University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition and sedated.
Investigators are working to identify both the driver and the vehicle involved.
The Union Police Department is asking the public for help identifying the driver.
Anyone with information about the crash, the pedestrian's identity, or the whereabouts of a gray Dodge Durango with possible front-end damage is urged to contact Crash Investigator Steve Beauduy at 908-851-5072.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation.
