UNION, NJ — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) enforcement activity reported on Wednesday within Union Township and nearby areas has prompted police to issue a response condemning its actions.
Union Township Police Director Carl Riley said on Thursday the department became aware of the Wednesday morning ICE activity through a concerned citizen.
"The Township of Union Police Department does not support or condone ICE's tactics operating in our Township," said Riley.
ICE had previously indicated that it would notify the Union Township Police Department when conducting enforcement operations within the municipality, according to Deputy Chief Barry Cohen.
"Unfortunately, our department received no notification from ICE either before or after this operation. The Police Department is disappointed by this lack of communication and transparency."
Both Riley and Cohen said they would contact ICE to discuss the incident and express their displeasure.
Residents who see ICE activity in the Township are asked to contact the police department.
"The Police Department remains committed to public safety, transparency, and maintaining the trust of the community," said Riley.
