WESTFIELD, NJ — Work is continuing across the Westfield School District on referendum-funded construction projects tied to school facility upgrades and the planned launch of full-day kindergarten in September 2028.
The work includes electrical service upgrades, media center renovations, heating and cooling improvements, and bidding on new elementary school projects.
The district said all schools except Lincoln will receive electrical service upgrades to support new additions or new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
Preliminary work at Franklin is complete, and the contractor has moved to McKinley as crews continue around the district.
Families may notice fenced work areas and deliveries of new utility poles and equipment. The transition to the upgraded electrical services is scheduled for summer 2027.
At Franklin Elementary, crews continue relocating the rooftop HVAC unit. The district said preparation involving ductwork, the gas line, and the roof has taken place outside school hours to reduce disruption to students and staff.
At Edison and Roosevelt intermediate schools, media center renovations are still underway and are taking longer than first expected, according to the update.
At Edison, crews have been working on walls, plumbing, fire alarm wiring, and preparing for painting.
At Roosevelt, crews have focused on ductwork, insulation, and electrical systems.
The district said, "We appreciate students' and staff members' patience as these updated learning spaces take shape."
At McKinley Elementary, construction trailers are now on site as crews prepare to begin a larger additions and renovations project.
Work areas are fenced, and the district asked families to remind children to stay clear of construction areas.
At Washington Elementary, the district said it is working with the construction team to review site grading and address rainwater runoff while newly seeded grass becomes established.
The update said those conditions remain a priority as the team addresses the remaining site improvements.
The district also provided a timeline for upcoming full-day kindergarten projects.
The district received bids for Franklin on Oct. 15 and for Washington on Oct. 27. Bids are due Oct. 30 for Wilson, Nov. 10 for Tamaques, and Dec. 8 for Jefferson, which the district said it advertised Oct. 15.
Contract awards for Franklin, Washington, Wilson, and Tamaques are anticipated for Board consideration on Nov. 17, followed by Jefferson on Dec. 15, according to the update.
The district said bidding for the intermediate and high school projects will follow, with schedules to be shared when available.
