Our speaker, Mark Scher,
is a retired attorney with decades of experience in immigration law. Born in Warsaw, Poland, he earned his law degree from the University of Warsaw before arriving in the United States as a refugee in 1969. He later received a J.D., and an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from New York University. He served as an attorney with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, an Administrative Law Judge, and later practiced immigration law in New York City. He will discuss the current immigration policies, including efforts to reduce unauthorized immigration, expand detention and deportation, restrict asylum and refugee protections, limit humanitarian immigration programs, and strengthen executive authority over immigration enforcement (ICE). He will also review the major immigration decisions of the Supreme Court's 2025–2026 term and explain how several rulings reinforced the administration's policies.

Mark ScherThe Summit Area Old Guard is a social, educational, and recreational organization that serves men of retirement age. The Weiss Family Jazz Series presents the Daniel Bennett Group from 7-8:00 p.m. The Jazz Series was established with a bequest to the Westfield Memorial Library Foundation in memory of longtime library patrons and jazz lovers, Joseph and Dorothy Weiss.
New York saxophonist Daniel Bennett has been hailed as one of the most original and unpredictable musical voices of his generation. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette describes Bennett's music as a mix of "Modern Jazz and Avant-Pop." He was voted 'Best New Jazz' in NYC Hot House Magazine. The Daniel Bennett Group is celebrating the release of their new album, 'The Deconstructed Songbook.' Downbeat Magazine raves, "Bennett's light touch and quirky writing radiates a naive optimism with a folk flavor. A true original!"

Bennett has been featured in the Boston Globe, Miami Herald, Timeout New York and NPR. He is a prolific music educator and clinician at the New York Jazz Academy. The UK Jazz Journal called Bennett, "an outspoken voice of hope" in music education. Daniel recently played woodwinds in 'Blank! The Musical,' the first fully-improvised musical to launch on a national stage. The New York Times called the show "witty, likable and ludicrous!" His genre-bending sound has captivated audiences throughout the world.
At this show, Bennett will play saxophone, flute and clarinet, and will be accompanied by Koko Bermejo on drums and keyboard with Jeff Dingleron bass.Register

“THE JEWS AND THEIR LAND: WHY ISRAEL MATTERS”
The Union County Torah Center–Chabad will present “The Jews and Their Land: Why Israel Matters,” an online class delivered by Rabbi Levi Block, on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom.
Presented as part of the center’s “Exploring Timeless Jewish Wisdom for Everyday Life” series, the class will examine the unique and enduring relationship between the Jewish people and the Land of Israel.
Why does Israel hold such a deep connection for every Jew, even for those who have never been there? The Torah shows that our bond to the land goes far beyond geography or politics—it is spiritual, rooted in G-d’s promise to Avraham and reaffirmed to his descendants.
This class explores that enduring connection, from the earliest promises to its impact on Jewish life today, revealing why Israel is not just a place, but the heart of our people.
Participants will discover how the Torah describes the Jewish people’s relationship with the land, how that bond has been carried through the generations, and why Israel continues to occupy such a central place in Jewish identity and spiritual life.
The class will be delivered live on Zoom. Registration is required at https://torahcenterchabad.org/why-israel-matters/ to receive the Zoom link.
