Congregation Beth Israel Students Compete in “Top Chef”-Style Challenge for Passover

Fourth-grade students and their parents participated in a family education program about Passover at Congregation Beth Israel’s Religious School on Sunday, March 26. The students and their parents separated into teams and competed against one another in a “Top Chef”-style cook-off to determine who could create the best Haroset, a ceremonial dish served during the Passover seder that symbolizes the mortar that the ancient Israelites used to make bricks when they were enslaved in Egypt. The students and their parents learned that recipes for the sweet Haroset paste vary greatly among Jews around the world, so they tried to create their own versions of Haroset using a variety of ingredients.
