Construction Begins On Major Upgrades At 7 Westfield Schools This Summer

WESTFIELD, NJ — Summer break is bringing more than quiet hallways to Westfield Public Schools.

Construction is now underway on several voter-approved referendum projects across seven schools, with district officials aiming to complete the work before students return for the new school year.

According to Westfield Public Schools, this summer's projects include playground improvements, HVAC work, traffic flow upgrades, restroom renovations and new collaborative learning spaces.

The district said construction is taking place over a nine-week period, with a target completion date of Aug. 31.

Among the most visible projects is at Franklin Elementary School, where crews are relocating a rooftop HVAC unit to make room for a future building addition and classroom renovations. Construction is also underway on a new drive loop and covered canopy designed to improve traffic flow during student drop-off and pickup.

At Washington Elementary School, work includes relocating the existing playground and installing new play structures and safety surfacing in preparation for a planned school addition.

Meanwhile, Tamaques Elementary School, Wilson Elementary School and Westfield High School are all undergoing restroom renovations as part of a single construction project spanning the three buildings.

Students at Edison Intermediate School and Roosevelt Intermediate School can also expect changes when they return this fall. The district is creating new Learning Commons at both schools, replacing more traditional library and media center layouts with collaborative learning spaces for students in grades six through eight.

In a social media update, the district announced that "construction is officially underway on our Referendum projects," adding that more updates will be shared as work progresses throughout the summer.
