DWI Arrest, Porch Pirates, Shoplifting Reported In Westfield

Westfield Police released its blotter for March 8 to March 14:

WESTFIELD, NJ — A driving while intoxicated arrest, package theft, shoplifting, and fraud were reported recently in Westfield.

On March 8 at 8:52 p.m.: Robert Schmidt, 65, Westfield, was arrested for DWI near the intersection of East North Avenue and Chestnut Street pursuant to a motor vehicle stop investigation. He was taken to Westfield Police Department Headquarters, processed, and released upon the issuance of summonses.

On March 9 at 5:22 p.m.: A victim of the 400 block of E. North Ave. reported a fraudulent $2,000 withdrawal from his business checking account. The victim stated that the suspect previously received the business’s routing and account numbers during a legitimate transaction and then funds were withdrawn from the account.

On March 10 at 4:40 p.m.: Officers responded to a business in the area of 200 block of E. North Avenue for a reported shoplifting. Store management reported that a man wearing dark clothing and a winter cap entered the store shortly before 4:30 p.m., concealed two containers of infant formula in a bag, and exited without paying. The items were valued at around $48. Officers checked the surrounding area for the suspect with negative results.

On March 11 at 12:21 a.m.: A resident of Sandra Circle reported a theft of two packages. The resident reported making two separate purchases from the same business and never received the packages. The resident contacted the distributor, who confirmed the packages were delivered to the home. The resident is at a loss of around $1,100 at this time.

On March 12 at 9 a.m.: A resident reports an incident of fraud when a mailed check was intercepted and altered by an unknown suspect. The altered check was deposited digitally for a new amount, under a new name. The victim suffered a monetary loss of $2,400 before notifying the bank of fraudulent activity.

On March 13 at 10:04 p.m.: Officers conducted a motor vehicle stop near the intersection of Elm Street and West North Avenue. During the stop, Julian Chaverra, 18, Kenilworth, was placed under arrest for an active $500 ATS warrant issued by the Clark Municipal Court. He was released at the scene upon the issuance of an ROR.
